Who Makes Nissan?

The Nissan Motor Company is a Japanese based automaker that produces vehicles world-wide. It is currently the sixth largest automaker in the world. Today Nissan also produces a range of luxury auto models under the Infiniti brand.

Nissan's History

Nissan's beginnings go back to 1911 when Masujiro Hashimoto founded the Kwaishinsha Motor company, where it created its first automobile, the DAT. The name 'Nissan' came about during the 1930s as an abbreviation used on the Tokyo stock market for Nippon Sangyo, the holding company owned by Hashimoto.

By the 1950s Nissan had expanded into worldwide markets. Nissan realized their Datsun small car line would fill a niche in markets such as Australia and the world's largest car market, the United States. Nissan formed a U.S. subsidiary, Nissan Motor Corporation U.S.A., in 1959.

Nissan Today

Nissan has become a leader in safety technology, fuel efficiency, as well as alternative-powered vehicles, such as the Nissan Leaf, which is the world's best-selling electric car.

Nissan Design America, is a world-famous design studio located in San Diego California, and is home to 60 of the 500 automotive designers in all of North America. There, the team designs vehicles tailored for the North America market. These Nissan designers are responsible for the creation of the Altima, Maxima, Xterra, and Frontier, as well as the top-tier luxury sports car, the 370Z.
